Technical issues
New subscriber here. I had some technical issues with this course (though they don't seem to be specific to this course), and I couldn't find a technical support section in the forums, so I'm posting here: 1. I selected the animatronics basics pathway, and started this course from there after completing the design basics… -
Re: Looking for suggestions
The 3d printer is a great resource for cosplay, especially when paired with CAD and 3d modeling skills. One suggestion would be to encourage them to start learning a CAD tool like Tinkercad https://www.tinkercad.com/ which is used a lot in STEAM education. It's a good introduction to the world of CAD and can help him to… -
Re: Sculpture Mold Help
Thanks for the feedback, Chris! I updated the post to include additional angles of the sculpt. Haven't tried a Glove Mold before, but I can see the benefits from that video. The piece that still worries me, is the hollow interior (basically a cylinder) and slightly concave base (under the limbs). How that works in the mold… -
Re: Monster Mask or prop making
We do have plans to release more mask making courses in the future. While it's not Casey Love or oil based clay, our series with Timothy Martin on latex mask making is great: https://www.stanwinstonschool.com/tutorials/how-to-make-a-latex-rubber-mask-1-sculpture-process And this one by Norman Cabrera is also fantastic:… -
Re: Student Introductions and Image Gallery
After hearing BJ describe the mech for his muffin, I made this clear prototype so you can see it's guts. The prototype works nicely. It took lots of tweeking to find the right combo of parts (including the spring) and the proper distances between parts. At neutral, the mouth is closed. Pull the string and the mouth opens.… -
Re: Silicone painting medium substitute for PSI-641?
If you are talking about the difference between GE1 and GE2 silicones, it is the cure method. GE1 is an acetoxy cure and releases acetic acid as a cure byproduct. GE2 is a neutral cure and releases methanol and ammonia as a byproduct. The information above is partially correct but there are two types of RTV2 silicones. The… -
Joker - Death of the Family (Second entry)
This is my actual costume for this year. It was meant to be a combination of several different Jokers, most notably, the versions from 'Death of the Family' and 'The Dark Knight'. The face makeup is really just a mask I created from card, then adorned with paper clay. There would be an extension of the face to give the… -
A Gregarious Menagerie
https://youtu.be/xE5PGmdIH3U “A Gregarious Menagerie” is my own version of an elaborate music box, of sorts. This is built around a refurbished antique record player box, with all internal elements replaced with my own constructed parts. When a handle is cranked, an intricate gear system of my own design plays a four note… -
Angler Fish: Be Your Own Light Unto the World
This glamor look was designed and created by me using primarily Ben Nye products. The jaw appliance was made with cotton balls and liquid latex, the teeth/fins/light were crafted from thermal plastic and a small led light, and the eye texture was made using a latex stretch and stipple technique with tissue paper applied on… -
Amateur Hiisi and Shaman Inspired Forest Creature - Kid Friendly
First time working with clay!!! Complete 'project.' This was a fun project I had fun experimenting with. He was an idea that evolved from wanting a forest type creature that was inspired by hiisi myth and a woodland shaman. Total time working on it was about 6 hours not including drying times. Base creature frame from… -
Workshop Floorplan
Hello everyone, I am about to acquire a new property and it will include a 24'x40' shop. It's 12' tall with 2 roll up doors, so I will have plenty of room for an incredible workspace. I currently am working out of a 8.5'x 8.5' room, so I will be increasing my area substantially. I have grown to love my small space because… -

Types of Clingwrap to use.
Hi Folks. I did a test try of making my own dummy. I'll put up pictures of version 2. What I found was Don't use kitchen style clingwrap. 1. It's too flimsy 2. It does not easily bond to itself. Moisture etc will cause it to unstick and that includes sweat. 3. After the layer is cut from the human the clingwrap will start… -
Nia - Poseable Fantasy Creature

Painting Human Maquettes
Hi guys, loving Stan Winston School so far... I joined mainly for help with maquette production. I'd love to see a course on assembling and painting a life-like human maquette if possible. I watched the Avatar Character Painting class but it didn't really go into assembly IE: whats best to assemble pre-paint vs post paint,… -
Admiral Karver - Original Alien Bust - Entry 2
This is Admiral Karver! He's an original alien design sculpted and painted entirely by me. For this fella, I wanted to make him feel alive and menacing. I've painted this character in a variety of different ways always playing with how I can emphasize different aspects of his design to change the way he's perceived… -
Aughra Latex Mask- Creature Painting Contest Entry 1
Aughra; The Dark Crystal, 1982 Aughra started as a practice sculpt and then became a practice mould, then a practice cast, and finally a practice airbrush. Everything about the mask was a first try at something. She was cast in latex, airbrushed and hand detailed with pax paint. The horns are painted resin from an existing… -
