Who loves stop motion?

If you're anything like me, you grew up watching movies with awe inspiring stop motion characters.

The movie magic of films like King Kong, Jason and the Argonauts, RoboCop, Nightmare Before Christmas, and Clash of the Titans made me want to learn how to create fantastic worlds and creatures, one frame at a time.

What classic stop motion films inspire you?

Today the artform is still going strong with wonderful movies like Coraline, Wallace & Gromit, ParaNorman, Corpse Bride, and so many more.
What are some of your favorite modern stop motion films?

The work coming out of companies like LAIKA has really impressed me.  Here is a great article I found about their latest project "The Boxtrolls"    http://boingboing.net/2014/09/26/the-hands-and-minds-behind-the.html  Their instagram feed for the film has some really wonderful behind the scenes shots and clips as well.

I'm really excited for the new on-demand lesson from the Chiodo Bros on Stop Motion Puppet Creation.

Have any of you tried your hand at stop motion?

  • Just signed up, was hoping to sign up for the class when it first aired but I was caught up with a job.  anyway i quit that job to continue to work on my craft of stop motion, and in hopes of one day getting the opportunity to work with such greats as the Chiodo Bros or the peeps at Laika, or really any studio that puts their stories and artwork out there for the world to enjoy.

I did just finished watching the Chiodo Bros first installment, learned a good amount of information with building a solid wire armature.  Super excited to see their next videos and start to apply that to my work.

I enjoy all the hard work and dedication it takes to make these films and would love to talk to anyone that enjoys it as much as i do.

  • Glad you liked the first installment of the Chiodo Bro's class!

I am looking forward to watching their next video as well.  I don't think I could even be a stop motion animator, but I love the idea of building the characters, sets, and props.

  • Hi Chris,
and I am a fan of stop-motion animation as well and I love the art itself. Probably, the best one is Phil Tippett, but there's some amazing and very talented people which work I love too, such as Doug Beswick, The Chiodo Brothers, the late David Allen, Ted Rae, Randy Cooke, just to name a few.
  • Hey Dimitar,

Funny timing, I'm actually watching the Ray Harryhausen documentary on Netflix right now.  Such an amazing man who we owe so very much to.

I love Phil Tippett too!  I'm a backer on both installments of his Mad God project  (even have one of his screen used characters from that series).

This lesson series (and the Ray Harryhausen documentary I watched last Friday) really has me wanting to do a stop motion movie night.  So many great movies to pick from!

  • Hello!  I've just started this series as part of the new 'Puppet' 'Pathway'.  I know I'm late to stop motion, but I'm looking for a printout of the Chiodo's blueprint, if there is one.  I've been searching the Forums for a while, and I'm hoping that there is still a way to receive a copy.  Thank you!
  • Hi Gina,

I don't know what blueprints we do or don't have, but we can look into it for you.  What type of blueprint are you looking for?

    Thanks,

    /Chris
  • Hey Gina, I was looking for the same thing after watching their class. Here's a link to the forum that has it: https://forums.stanwinstonschool.com/discussion/comment/4378#Comment_4378
