Achilles – Troy (2004) Costume Replica

Hi! This is my handmade Achilles costume inspired by Troy (2004).
I made most of the costume myself, starting by creating my own patterns and preparing them for printing before building the armor, leather pieces, clothing, and accessories. Throughout the project, I used a variety of materials and techniques, including leatherwork, sewing, EVA foam, Worbla, painting, finishing, and weathering.
My goal was to recreate Achilles’ look from the film as accurately as possible while keeping the costume wearable, functional, and realistic.
I paid a lot of attention to the shapes, proportions, textures, colors, and small details to make the final result feel as close as possible to the original costume.
I’m also including photos of the finished costume, along with some images from the fabrication process to show how the different pieces were created.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it! I put a lot of time and effort into making it as accurate to the movie as possible, so that means a lot to me!
  • Nathan, excellent work! I am in need of this replica helmet for my own future build, can you please tell us the story behind this piece? It looks like a screen match for the sculpt or close enough that I don't see a difference.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it! 😁

For this helmet, I started by creating a 3D sculpt on my computer, which I then used to generate paper patterns. I spent a lot of time adjusting the patterns and adding as many details as possible before transferring everything back to the computer to create clean and accurate templates.

For the construction, I used 2mm EVA foam, with each individual piece encapsulated between two layers of Black Worbla. This gave the helmet a strong and rigid finish on both the inside and outside. Once all the pieces were ready, I assembled everything, blended the seams to make them disappear, and added the smaller details, edges, and raised sections.

For the crest, I bought real horsehair and tied it into many small U-shaped bundles, which I then sewed inside a leather sleeve. Once completed, I inserted the crest into the helmet and glued it in place.

For the finishing, I used Flexbond applied with a sponge to create the surface texture. I then painted it using Greek Gold and Black Rub 'n Buff to achieve the aged metallic appearance. Finally, I sealed everything with Flexbond.

My goal was to recreate the helmet from Troy (2004) as faithfully as possible, so I spent a lot of time studying references and working on the small details. It means a lot to hear that you think it looks so close to the original!
  • I have stared at this helmet, the original, from auction photos and can confirm that you did an impeccable job. I'm super picky so I did look. If there is anything off, it must be at an angle I am not seeing.

Wow, thank you so much! That really means a lot to me, especially coming from someone who has studied the original helmet so closely! I spent countless hours trying to get every detail as accurate as possible, so hearing that from you is honestly one of the best compliments I could receive. I really appreciate it! 😁
