What's On Your Workbench?

  • I’m working on some kind of mutated creature thing for a latex mask. I’m almost done with the sculpt but I am now at an impasse. I only have a little bit of Ultracal 30 left, not enough for a full mold. What are other people using for molds since the USG stuff has been discontinued? I am reading about Merlin’s Magic and people trying to mix their own version of Ultracal 30. Any suggestions?

  • great form and detail Cory! very derp, poor fella seems happy enough, though :)

Moving along with printing the next sculpt- This is part of a series that relates back to my study of the Barye .. circle of life stuff.
  • I am currently completing my Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck and have one final component to make, the baliset. Here is my current status:

I did some rough estimations of length and then took the photos into my measurement app. I sent the sizes to my buddy and he cut the base shape. A rectangle at first but I had given him my rough measurement for the taper and by the time I got there to pick it up he had already finalized the outline. I just needed to sand in all the rolling edges, round out the neck and flatten the strumming and pickup area. I then dremelled the fret notches and the string notches at the neck. I did a dusting paint coat of Krylon Satin Espresso Brown, messy on purpose, and then used armature wire for the frets. Here is Brolin holding the prop:

  • I am currently in college for film as a freshman. I have been commissioned to make a facial prosthetic makeup appliance to turn our actor into Azreal, the angel of death. I went through many different concepts and the one we landed on has many eyes embedded into his "zygomatic" bone, if you could even say that. You can see more images of it here: "Azreal" The Angel of Death - by Braden Kephart — Stan Winston School of Character Arts ForumsHere you can see my initial sculpt. It was a very quick sculpt as I only had a week and 5 days to pull off the entire project.
  • Baliset is complete. Pardon my yellow lighting. The colors are nearly identical.

Mine is on the right. I need to add the silver bar and adjust the end piece to shorten the length. The baliset and the strap are fully from scratch.
  • Darrell- that looks so legit...does it play?
BoBn - not half bad for a rush job! Keep pushing to the final mask!

Panther update - all assembled and now I'm chasing the seams down and fixing any warps from printing

This run was for the pose pictures, coming soon. However, parts are already ordered for an attempt at a working version. I have little experience here, so, am leaning hard into questioning my musical friends. I will still do the actual making but no reason to reinvent thousands of years of musical theory anc instrument tech. I have been told the frets are not accurate in the movie version so the working unit will have the spacing according to a 9 string guitar.

The cat is looking awesome, so close to the finish now.
  • Working on hair and makeup tonight for a test run. Keep in mind this is not a complete test and there will be further enhancements to mustache and beard hair additions.

  • I see a whiffle in you future Mr. Green, you look very Brolin-esq :)
It'll be cool to take a fantasy object and make it a real working prototype, at the very least you'll learn some instrument making and at best a real funky instrument. Maybe it's time to dust of some old Butlerian Jihad songs ...
  • Still need the extra beard fill and the scar. Not yet complete.

I just finished my first two classes on the puppet pathway. Instead of making a muffin, I made a mushroom. Meet Phil the psilocybe. I’ve never carved foam before and learned so much. Thank you BJ, you are a wonderful instructor. PS: I felted wool to make his eyes giving this simple puppet so much depth imo. .
