How to clean mold release off Super Baldiez

I was watching Josh Saks' creating of the glow in the dark prosthetics and he mentioned being nice to the makeup artist who will be applying and wiping off any potential excess of mold release from the encapsulator (Q ballz) with 99 IPA.  Since it's acetone based, it obviously will work great, but if you are using Super Baldiez which is based in IPA, what would you use or are you kind of just SOL?

  • Hi @Leslie Rosado - We shared your question with course instructor Josh Saks, and this is the advice he shared. Hope it helps! - Matt

"So there are 2 things I’d suggest, mainly I don’t use Super Baldiez for that reason, also most of my makeups are going to be painted with alcohol paints and that’s asking for trouble with Super Baldiez, BUT I have done it before, and here’s what I recommend-
Super Baldiez is thinned with 99% IPA, so if you use a lesser strength (i.e. 70% IPA  or watered down 99%) and you move swiftly and don’t let it sit on the surface for too long, it SHOULDN'T affect the Super Baldiez. That can be tricky, though.
For a safer alternative, I’d recommend using a very small amount of Dawn dish soap in distilled water and carefully wiping down the prosthetic. Then rinse it off to make sure all the soap residue is gone. Dawn will get rid of the release, but can leave a buildup, so make sure to wipe it down twice with water.
On the other hand, I have in the past used a silicone glue thinner like Telesis 9 thinner to remove stubborn release residue, but that can be an expensive route and doesn’t always remove everything. Your best bet is to lightly scrub with a Dawn/water mix on a makeup sponge, and that should solve your problems! I can’t speak to other soaps as I’ve only used Dawn, and it’s safe for skin and baby ducks covered in oil, so it’s perfect for oily residues like mold release."
