Stan Winston School of Character Arts 2024 Halloween Costume contest entry - Impersonation cosplay costume - As Orlando Bloom As Will Turner in Pirates of the Caribbean 5 end credits family reunion scene. Of the entire costume, only the lower portion of the boots was not hand made by me. All design aspects are copied directly from the movie with no intentional design changes or additions done by me. The intent was an exact match, so all design credit goes to the original POTC design team. My goal was to recreate the costume and props while utilizing a complete set of cosmetic and prosthetic techniques to impersonate Orlando Bloom to a relatively high likeness percentage.

    Many portions of the Will Turner costume build included sculpting items to then be cast and colored for use. First on my list was the buttons for the coat. Many existed online but none were accurate. This is the most common theme in costume re-creation. If you want it done right, do it yourself. This required having the techniques because even I couldn't do it right without the skills. I continued my classes here on SWSCA and gathered some high res pics of the buttons on Will Turner's coat. I made an entire set, only to then decide they looked too large. I recreated the entire batch and the process. When this costume was done, I was very confident in my new ability to sculpt what I saw in any movie. Although quite primitive, compared to 3d printing, I could now remake anything I saw. I learned to be my own Star Trek replicator. It is a true joy to be able to do this.

    In this pic, you see my rerun with the smaller buttons. Only an eighth of an inch trimmed off the edge but it made all the difference, to me. It also started a new process, for all of my work, that incorporated added scaling and measurement tools, testing and comparisons, prior to full set production, in order to eliminate wasted time and wasted material. I have a degree in manufacturing engineering and further certifications in efficiency, best practices, and waste reduction. It feels good to bring this into my effects work. I say "work" but it is my hobby. I learn, here, for myself and the pure joy of it. I do not work, or even dabble at working, in the industry.

    My last few comp shots with Orlando to show some of the prosthetic work. Ears and nose were the biggest physical hurdles. 

    The comp is Orlando first, then my modified lobe and then my unmodified.


    And opposite side. In this comp Orlando is on the left again.


    This shot (above) is before cover makeup; in order to show where the effects were applied.

    The following is with nose adjustment completed, which brough the likeness level to my current maximum on this build (posted for nose comparison). Second pic is my nose without mod.

    Other work include shaping facial hair silhouette. This is like drawing a 1 minute facial outline with only hair areas shaded in. Like those quickdraw portraits at carnivals or the political cartoons with the exaggerated features. Removed what does not match and then either add hair or draw hair:
