For my 2026 Stan Winston School Costume Contest entry, I am proud to present my handmade Skeletor costume, inspired by the 2026 Masters of the Universe movie.

This costume was created using a combination of digital sculpting, 3D printing, traditional sculpting, molding and casting, foam fabrication, painting, and textile work. My goal was to bring Skeletor to life while incorporating realistic textures, detailed armor, and functional elements that allow the character to feel more expressive and intimidating.

Below is a breakdown of the fabrication process for each component.

Skull

The skull was digitally sculpted in Blender and 3D printed. Once printed, it was meticulously hand-sanded to smooth the surface and prepare it for painting.

A combination of hand painting, acrylic washes, and airbrushing was used to create depth, realistic bone coloration, and a weathered appearance.

The jaw features a functional mechanism that allows it to move naturally with my own mouth, bringing additional life and expression to the character. For the eyes, individual red LEDs were installed into black mesh, creating Skeletor's signature glowing red gaze while concealing my eyes.

Muscle Bodysuit

The muscle suit was entirely handcrafted using upholstery foam. Each individual muscle group was cut, shaped, and glued onto a base bodysuit to create Skeletor's exaggerated muscular anatomy.

Once the muscle structure was completed, the suit was covered in fabric and layered with latex to create additional texture and a more organic appearance.

The entire suit was then hand-painted to enhance the muscle definition, add shadows and highlights, and give the body a realistic finish.

Gloves

The gloves were created using traditional sculpting, molding, and casting techniques.

I began by making lifecasts of my own hands, which served as the foundation for hand-sculpting the glove details. Once the sculpts were completed, molds were created using Ultracal 30.

The gloves were then cast in latex, allowing them to remain flexible and wearable. Each glove was individually hand-painted to achieve the desired finish.

Modified acrylic nails were added to create Skeletor's claw-like fingertips, then painted to blend seamlessly with the rest of the gloves.

Boots

The boots began as purchased footwear that was repainted purple to match the costume.

The armor components were digitally sculpted in Blender and 3D printed. Each piece was hand-sanded and finished using Rub 'n Buff to create a metallic appearance.

Transparent purple airbrush paint was then applied over the metallic finish to achieve the distinctive purple-tinted armor seen on the character.

Once completed, the armor pieces were attached to the boots.

Armor

All of the armor was digitally sculpted in Blender and 3D printed using the same fabrication process as the boot armor.

After printing, each individual component was carefully hand-sanded and prepared for finishing.

Rub 'n Buff was applied to create a metallic base, followed by transparent purple airbrush paint to give the armor its unique coloration while maintaining the metallic appearance underneath.

This process helped establish a consistent finish throughout the costume.
Skirt

Each piece of the skirt was individually cut out of snake skin leather and dyed purple. They were then each attached to the belt.
Cape

The cape was handcrafted using monk's cloth, chosen for its unique woven texture and natural drape.

One of the defining features is the spine-like detail running down the back, which was created using a fabric weaving and pleating technique to add dimensional texture.

Once assembled, the cape was dyed purple and weathered using brown and black acrylic paints to create a worn, aged appearance that complements Skeletor's overall design.

Havoc Staff

For the finishing touch, I used Mattel's Havoc Staff prop, which I repainted to better match the colors and overall aesthetic of my costume.

Show time! You would need to be standing right next to the original for me to pick at anything. This was a lot of work and it shows.
