Moulding Advice please

Hey everyone just wanting some advice this is my first attempt at moulding and using latex. I have sculpted my Grishnákh monster mask with monster clay and was just wanting to make sure how much supplies amounts i will need to mould and then make 2 latex masks of this sculpt? EG how much casting plaster and how much latex in kilograms? Thanks for your help

  • The amount of latex you need will depend on the casting method you use.  A common way to make latex masks with stone molds is to fill the cavity of the mold with latext, and let it dwell for a period of time to build up a skin on the inside of the plaster.  The longer it dwells, the thicker that skin gets.   Then you dump the latex back into your storage container and let the mold air dry.   This method requires a lot of latex, as you have to fill the entire mold cavity.

    As an alternative, you can brush in the latex, or slush/roto cast latex in the mold one layer at a time to slowly build up thickness.  This uses less material, but requires a lot more labor.

  • a good 25lb bag of Ultracal gypsum with be sufficient enough for molding that..be sure to use burlap or plaster bandages in between your print coat and subsequent layer...a good 5 gallon bucket of latex will sufficiently produce many many masks..dwell times for masks are generally 2 hours depending on the thickness desired
