Can you help me brainstorm?
in General
I hope this kind of post is allowed.
I'm a highly ambitious artist and I have a tendency to have grand ideas and struggle to figure out how to pull off what I have in mind.
Right now I'm a creature artist for a stage adaptation of Dracula. We're in the very early concept and prototype phase and what I'm *hoping* to be able to do for Dracula's brides is something similar to what they did in Fright Night (inspiration picture down below).
The goal is do make it with separate facial appliances that would allow the actress's mouth to look typical for her lines and then have a big scare moment as the mouth unhinged and opens wide. I'm curious if I could use bladders in the cheeks to assist with moving the mouth down to make it look like she's opening wide.
I'm not opposed to switching gears and making it a mask rather than prosthetics but it's really important to me that he mouth articulates and unhinges and to not look like an actor in a mask.
I have all summer to play and tinker with ideas
Am I crazy? Is this even a possibility?
I'm open to any and all thoughts/suggestions.
Thank you!!

How is the transition done in the stage show? As in, does she have a normal mouth and then suddenly, right in front of the audience, open up to have her mouth agape? Does she hide her face on stage and return to reveal the transition, or can the entire transformation be done offstage?
Have you looked into how they did it in Fright Night?
Finally, what sort of actions does the performer need to do with the mouth? I see you want it articulated - should they be able to open and close the mouth for, say, screams and attacking people, or to perform dialogue?
The actor will need to be able to speak but the bulk of the scene is her screaming and attacking. It's not a moment that would last very long so it might not be something worth pursuing but man I want to try. It also feels worth mentioning that the lighting will be fairly dim.
I tried to look into how they did it for Fright Night but couldn't find much. This is the most information I found on a fan's blog, "Tom Holland wanted to add an extra scare in the film, so he asked Randall William Cook, the film’s visual effects artist to create a shark mouth for Vampire Amy. With no time or money for this mouth piece, Cook agreed to make the piece anyway with the knowledge that it would only be seen for a few seconds onscreen. The shark mouth was not only shown for a significant amount of time, it became the centerpiece on the movie’s poster."
