Can encapsulated silicone prosthetics be made only on flat surfaces?

Hi all.
I'm thinking about something but haven't found an answer to this yet: Can encapsulated silicone prosthetics only be made on a flat surface. Or can the sculpting and molding be done on a life cast as well. And if so, is there any tutorial or reference? I just can't seem to wrap my brain around this. Thanks for any help!
