Multi-Stage Cable Mechanism Help

Hey! Right now we're putting together a 3 stage cable controlled puppet. We're trying to make it less stiff and difficult to move, and I was wondering if we could only have the cable housings outside of the creature, or if we needed to put cable housing inside for the second stage (the head). If we have to have the cable housings in there, what would you suggest we do to make the mechanism less stiff?

    They could go on the outside but it's generally best to keep them contained.  Either way, everything has to bend.

    If you are having trouble producing enough force to move the segments one option is to use a longer lever on your controller to produce more force.  Everything just has to be strong enough to endure the extra force applied.
