Model building jobs.
in General
I heard they are building practical models for the Mandalorian. It’s shows like these I would love to work on, but the only jobs listed on ilm’s site are cg effects. Any suggestions? Thanks

Chris Ellerby AdminHi John,
Model building is one of the areas of practical effects hardest hit by CGI, so that portion of the industry is much smaller than it used to be and highly competitive with a lot of artists fighting for relatively few positions.
I would suggest doing as much research as you can on existing model shops and studios that have model departments. That way once you have a portfolio of your own model work you know where to send it.
One helpful tip is to diversify your skillset as much as possible. For example, if you also know sculpting, mold making, fabrication, and painting you are more likely to find work at a shop that will eventually have some model work or a position opening up in their model department. Being a specialist is great, but having a diverse skillset keeps you employed and opens more doors. Sometimes you have to work a few years in another department at different shops to demonstrate that you show up on time, have a positive attitude, work hard, and are a pleasure to work with. If people like to work with you they will be more likely to suggest your name when projects or job openings come up.
There are also shops out there that specialize in architectural models which is another place to hone those skills, make contacts, or find work.
