I never realized how genius the Taurus Demon boss battle actually is
I just revisited Dark Souls for the first time after a year and a half of playing Dark Souls 3 and Bloodborne, and I'm still impressed by how well the first half of the game was handled.
I especially enjoyed the Undead Burg and Parish. If the level design had been this tight and downright exceptional in the latter half of the game, Dark Souls would have been nearly flawless in my opinion.
But to get to the point of this post, while playing, I died to the Taurus Demon three times. I wasn't playing for keeps, I wanted to experience the bosses moveset and see how the fight differed depending on your plan of attack, and I was simply blown away.
I can say, without a shred of irony, that Taurus Demon is one of the smartest designed bosses in the entire series.
The designers took an enemy that had a limited moveset and turned him into one of the most fun and terrifying bosses in the game simply by placing him in a well-designed boss arena that goes far beyond the simple "big bowl-shaped room" that became the standard for many bosses in Dark Souls and its sequels.
