  • Nice!  What did you seal the Chavant with before painting?

  • Hi Chris,

I just airbrushed on a number of heavy clear coats prior to the first colour layer. Not sure how long this will last tho?

Any pro tips for sealing future chavant nsp sculpts?
  • I've only ever painted Chavant once, and that was as a last result.  I was sculpting a rat prop for a zombie film, in which it would be torn apart and consumed by a hungry ghoul.  I left my sculpt unattended overnight and in the morning I discovered my cat had rubbed against the sculpt, coating every inch of it in fur.  This pretty much killed my plans for finishing the sculpt and molding/casting it.  As it was needed on set in 2 days I just painted a few layers of liquid latex over the clay, articulated the head and leg joints with fabric, and then hand laid hair on it using pros-aide.  The clay added a good weight to the prop and made it feel disturbingly lifelike.  That prop lasted in my shop for a couple years before the latex started to break down.

If you keep your sculpt out of direct sunlight and don't handle it too often it should last for many years.

Here are some tips from Chavant for painting their clay:

  • This series of mold making lessons is full of great general tips.  A bit of the focus is on mold making for makeup effects, but most of the principals translate to other types of mold making.

And this lesson on making rod puppets covers making a basic fiberglass mold around a sculpt that is comparable to yours.
