Dreadknot — One Armor, Two Paths: Light and Shadow

Construction Documented Video:
Light & Dark — Two Custom Fantasy Armor Costumes, Four Character Looks
I designed and built these two coordinated fantasy armor costumes with the idea of creating characters that share a common visual style while having their own distinct identities.
The project combines digital sculpting, 3D printing, traditional costume fabrication, detailed painting, electronics, and theatrical makeup.
Design and Fabrication
I digitally sculpted and 3D printed the armor components, including the chest plates, shoulder armor, gauntlets, leg armor, crowns, and decorative skull elements.
Each piece was finished and painted to create the appearance of aged, battle-worn metal. I combined the rigid armor with flexible materials, layered fabric, and distressed cloth to maintain movement and comfort while preserving the armored appearance.
The costumes also incorporate custom headpieces, detailed facial treatments, and illuminated red eyes.
Two Face Designs
One of the more challenging elements was developing two different facial designs.
The first features a sculpted mask with an articulated jaw, allowing the mouth to move rather than remaining a completely static expression.
The second uses a fixed, hand-painted facial design, giving the character a different appearance and expression.
These approaches allowed me to explore different character personalities while keeping the overall costume design consistent.
Light and Dark — Reusing the Armor
After completing the original versions, I wanted to see how far I could transform the characters without rebuilding their armor.
Rather than creating entirely new costumes, I reused the original armor sets and changed the facial treatments, makeup, hair, and character styling.
The result was a second, darker interpretation of the same two characters, with a more sinister appearance.
I liked the idea of creating two opposing forces from the same underlying designs. The armor remains recognizable, but the characters take on very different personalities.
The Finished Project
The accompanying video documents the process from digital sculpting and 3D printing through finishing, assembly, and the completed costumes. It also demonstrates the articulated mask and the transformation between the light and dark versions.
This project was an opportunity to combine several fabrication techniques while experimenting with how the same handmade costume elements can be reused to create entirely different characters.
