Oni Monster - Modern Urban Japanese Demon Prosthetic by Anh Pham / PAFX Studio
Hi everyone, here is my third entry for the 2026 Halloween contest: Oni Monster.
The Design Story:
When we started planning our take on the Japanese Oni, we didn't want to make a traditional period piece or a stiff theatrical mask. Instead, we asked ourselves what an Oni would look like if he walked out of folklore and into a modern Asian city at 2 AM.
We styled the character as a mischievous urban demon in a charcoal herringbone suit, white dress shirt, and dark red tie, shooting the final look out on the street at night between parked cars, neon green lights, and red alley lanterns. Putting that wicked, ancient Hannya-inspired grin inside an everyday business suit makes him feel much more unsettling and alive.

Clay Sculpting Process (Face & Ears):
I sculpted the main facial appliance in oil-based clay on a lifecast head form, pushing the expression into a wide, manic grin with raised cheek apples, a broad flared nose, and deep forehead wrinkles that wrap around the base of the two curved horns. I carved vertical bone ridges into the horns, stippled skin pores across the nose and cheeks, and feathered the clay edges thin around the eye sockets and temples for a clean blend on skin.
Alongside the main face piece, I sculpted the pointed Oni ears as separate appliances on plaster ear casts, elongating the earlobes and sharpening the upper tips while keeping the blending edges thin.
Casting & Color Choices:
For the skin tone, instead of painting him bright cartoon red, we went with a weathered, fleshy human tone layered with warm reddish-brown shading in the deep creases. That choice makes the demon features feel like they are actually growing out of a real person's face. The horns were painted like aged bone with darker staining at the roots, and we finished the mouth with custom sharp fangs, darkened inner teeth, and a wet gloss over the gums.

Thanks for checking out all three of our entries this year, and happy Halloween to the whole Stan Winston School community!
