Epoxy Core Help - Sealer/Clear Coat?

Hello there,

I'm curious if anyone may know of a silicone safe clear coat or sealer I could use over an epoxy core that needed some patchwork repair done to it?

I had an issue with a registration key creating a flattened flaw on the forehead, a few bubble blemishes showing up and the steel bar I placed inside the core poked through the epoxy on one side.. This is only my 4th time trying to make epoxy/fiberglass cores, I still feeling pretty rusty approaching them and not revealing some strange flaw when demolding.

I'm wondering if I should seal the epoxy after it's been sanded and since I used apoxie sculpt (made sure it's the sulfur free version) to patch the flawed areas? I'm not sure if some of the scuff marks on the core could potentially cause bonding issues when making the epoxy negative for a prosthetic later on?

I really appreciate anyone's feedback in regard to silicone safe clear coats, if it even needs to be sealed, or if I could go over it with a thin layer of epoxacoat or possibly even resin, or has anyone used automotive enamel as a sealer? Not sure the best route to take 😅

  • Krylon Crystal Clear is a clear spray often used for sealing sculptures prior to molding, so it should work fine here if you feel the need to seal it.

If you are concerned about bonding issues, you can use brush-on releases like paste wax or combine those with spray-on releases.
