Questions about mold making materials

Hello everyone, I recently had the idea to create a full silicone werewolf mask, so I started doing a bit of research on the materials needed to create the fiberglass mold and silicone mask. Is it typical for a gallon of silicone to be around 200? It seems to me that with all the WED clay, silicone, prep chemicals, and materials to make the fiberglass mold, it could cost up to $700 for me to simply try once and hope that I don't mess up. Just feeling a bit intimidated, because I'd really like to learn how to make silicone masks to put them on a portfolio. I'm hoping to attend the Design and Technology degree at UCF, and I think silicone makes could be an impressive portfolio piece but I'm not sure where the best place to purchase materials would be. If any one has a list of materials they regularly use, as well as a price estimate for the total cost of it all, that would be incredibly helpful. Thank y'all, and stay creative!

  • You may not need a gallon of silicone for one mask mold, wed clay isn’t super expensive. Not sure of total cost per one mask, I have worked with silicone but with masks have only cast with latex. Definitely will be cheaper than $700. It depends on how many you want to run out of your mold.
  • If you can make a core mold you could run it using less silicone and control the thickness to save some dough….Maybe try a small project to get a feel for working with all the materials. Temperature can also hinder curing or cure times especially with it being winter. I have noticed some of my recent silicone projects taking a lot longer to cure even with me running a heater and hairdryer. The smaller project could also be a portfolio piece as well.
  • Depends on the type of silicone used..TIN-SIL WILL work for prop making ..Platinum will be best for MASK making. TIN usually runs about $200 Platinum about $50 to $75 MORE...for the mold all you need is autobody fiberglass resin and chopped mat easily gotten at Walmart or any auto parts place/hardware store...Reynolds Advanced Materials is probably the best place to get the silicone material...even better if you can go in and talk with the people who work there...they do seminars on site as well
