Help with direction for my teen who loves makeup and SFX in New Hampshire

Hi everyone, I am Mama Kara, Creator of Creators! ;) My youngest, who is 13, has always been interested in special effects makeup. Every time I would turn around, she was watching videos on how to make it look like you have a bloody cut finger, holes in the head, or some other SFX. We have gotten her some basic kit stuff from Amazon, but I am hoping to find some classes or a school in the New England area that would be willing to let her take classes to learn the more technical stuff and to hone her skills.

I have been in contact with Stan Winston about in person workshops, but it is quite the trip! I am working on getting her some SW online classes, but she really would love the hands-on stuff.

Anyone have any leads? Thanks!!

  • I don't know of any in-person special effects education resources in the New England area, but you may have luck finding local sculptors, fabricators, or painters who offer their own classes.  Even if the classes don't focus specifically on special effects, the skills learned there would still apply.  Local art shops may have postings for artists offering classes, and some community colleges have great art resources.

We don't do any in-person courses here at the Stan Winston School, but our online courses are very accessible and easy to follow along with.  We are also here on the forums to help support our students by answering their questions and offering feedback where we can.

  • Thank you so much for your reply. My apologies, I had spoken with Skull Asylum in GA about intensives for my daughter. I am really trying to find some stuff more local to us though, although a winter trip to the South isn't too terrible...lol

Thanks for the advice about finding classes. She has taken tons of art classes, loves sculpting and painting and makeup and all the things. Just looking for some more focused course work for her now. I'm going to let her take a look at the online courses and see if something catches her eye.

    Cheers!
