SFX research and background

Hey all, so I am not new to make up, but with SFX make-up I am just wondering, what other background do SFX ppl have? so, for example, if it’s a cut, a wound etc and needs to be very anatomical, what’s your first point of research? I have a diploma in criminology and am very interested in pathology. SO obviously anyone who is keen to do the best work in sfx (alien and zombie stuff aside) has to also have a lot of knowledge of human body, biology and pathology… just curious as to what sources sfx artists use for their research

  • Reference material is essential.

The internet is full of great resources for reference material, even if you just use Google image search.  Otherwise having books on the subject you are creating, such as reptiles, insects, machines, human anatomy, etc. is a good option.

For my projects, I start with a round of online research where I collect all the images I may need, and then I store/display them in a program called PureRef, which makes reference management super easy.  This works for me since I have a computer in my shop and can easily display references on monitors, tablets, etc.
