THE THING Tentacles and mechanism

Hey folks,

Super new here, so please excuse my ignorance with this question. I am super curious about how this effect was created in THE THING. What materials went into the creation of these thrashing tentacles? what kind of compressor would have been used? Splitters, etc? Any guidance would be super helpful.

  • I'm not sure about the technique used in this specific shot, but one method to create wildly flailing tentacles like this is to use compressed air.   Each tentacle would basically be an air hose that is flopping around as it propels itself around by emitting compressed air from the tip.   As far as what type of compressor, anything with a large volume tank should work, so you have plenty of time to allow all the tentacles to move around before the air runs out.   In this case, it's not about a sudden blast of air, as we often use in effects, but a constant release of air.    The PSI you need at the regulator would depend on how many tentacles, how much air they each let out, and how much they weigh.
