Mould making: Brass shims?

When making the mould, I thought about using brass shims but just had a thought, I can't make alignment keys with these.  Can you think of a way to do this? If not what are brass shims useful for?

    The shims create the parting line between the two halves of the mold.  They can be bent to form keys that help the mold haves align properly.

    Here is an example of metal shims that have been bent in a zig-zag pattern to help create keys.
