Dividing Wall Silicone Mold

Hi Everybody,

I took my oil based clay sculpture and coated it in silicone. I then built a clay dividing wall around it. I was going to coat the silicone with 2 coats of PVA , a coat of Caranuba wax and then make a fiberglass mother mold. This is my first time doing this so I wanted to ask if this is the proper procedure and if I’m missing anything? Thanks for your help?

  • Your process is good. I would make sure the clay and the silicone are as smooth as possible, so the fiberglass mother mold will seat easily without alignment issues.   You can also add some keys in your clay wall, and to the silicone, to help with alignment.

  • What is the final casting product going to be? If it is resin then yes silicone is a good mold to do that from..If it is silicone then the fiberglass resin will be good enough...trick is with the fiberglass resin mold for silicone casting is to use "tissue" paper fiberglass to capture all the tiny wrinkles and small details...a couple coats of that make a good base then you can apply chooped mat over that and then finish it off with cloth
