Chainsaw Man - 2025 Halloween Costume Contest Entry
hey there! here's my entry to the costume contest; the protagonist of the eponymous manga and anime Chainsaw Man :]
the head was designed and modeled by me in Blender, based on reference images taken from the manga. i scaled and exported the UV maps as full-size pattern pieces to be traced and cut out of EVA foam. the back of the head was done somewhat freehand in terms of the overall form, though the greeblies and profile shape were also designed in Blender beforehand.
the teeth were made from thermoplastic beads, as i found they were the best option for the look i was going for, and the top and bottom gums were created with foam clay.
to create the top and back handles, i glued together PVC pipes and spray painted them black before securing them on the inside of the head piece.
for the head chainsaw, the chain links and saw teeth are made from EVA foam, while the guide bar is made from tri-fold poster board for sturdiness. the arm chainsaws are solely EVA foam though, with wooden dowels sandwiched inside the guide bars for stability.
everything (besides the handles) was painted with PlaidFX acrylic paints to forego having to prime the foam, though a regular acrylic paint was used to meticulously hand-paint the orange gradient of the head and jaw.
now for my favorite part of the costume: the blood effects. achieved solely using Pale Night Productions' Perma-Blood (as recommended by SKS Props) and a spray bottle. i'm still very happy with how they turned out. for my first version of this costume, i personally wasn't completely satisfied with the look that flicking a brush or bristles with paint offered (not to mention the mess it left behind afterward), so i'm glad to have settled on a method and product that best achieves the more realistic look i'm after.
the shoes are also custom-made by me using a pair of white sneakers as a base, with (if i remember correctly) red marine vinyl purchased from Joann Fabrics (rest in peace) cut and glued to the shoes to replicate the character's sneakers (as seen in the first volume cover of the manga and throughout the anime.)
