Can you create a mould from casting plaster if your sculpture is made out of NSP Chavant?

Hello, 

I am looking for some advice.

I have created a small sculpture using NSP Chavant, and I am wanting to create a mould out of casting plaster that I can then use to slip cast with traditional clay and fire in a kiln. Is this possible, or will the chavant melt due to the heat of the plaster when its hardening? I was going to use Macwax to spray on my sculpt to make it easier to realise.

Has anyone ever done this before?

    Tiffany, I have used pottery plaster before to mold NSP Chavant clay sculpture. The clay won't melt when plaster mold heats up when hardening. I sprayed my sculpture with a light dusting of krylon crystal clear for release. After my mold was done i cleaned clay out and poured slip cast latex for mask making. It's a similar technique that should work just fine. Good luck.

    Hi Sean, thank you getting back to me. That's great to know. Did you manage to keep your original sculpt in one piece?

    Tiffany, sculpt came out of mold intact. I like chavant nsp medium clay. You can reuse it and make another sculpt. And it's compatible with silicone mold making materials. Do you use wood or metal sculpting tools with chavant clay ?

    That's great to know, as I'd like to keep my original sculpt if possible. I use metal. I have a mixture of dental tools, some homemade ones, ken tools, and ones like the Kemper W21 which I love. I also have a fab one which I use all the time, it was handmade by oldmonstrosity shop, Nolan is a fantastic tool maker.
