Silicone Mask hoods (netting)

I know for the most part the professionals use 4 way stretch fabric for the hoods encased in silicone masks..I am wondering as a budgetary thing for a test silicone mask would pantyhose fabric not work the same? I just do not have the resources of sewing for making hoods each and every time i might cast a silicone mask

  • With something like pantyhose, you would be stretching the material to fit over your form, which means it would be pre-stretched and applying force inward at all times.  This may impact the results of your test, and if your final masks use a different material, they will likely fit and move differently.

You could cut out smaller pieces of pantyhose and use those to reinforce areas like the eyes and mouth, and perhaps use strips to help reinforce the neck.  But at that point, I would just get power mesh and use smaller pieces of that material without sewing.

I recommend including the 4-way stretch power mesh in your test mask as part of the test, and use that as an opportunity to learn more about sewing and working with that material.

You don't need any fancy or expensive resources.  You can hand-sew it if you don't have access to a sewing machine.

  • I do have alot of 4 way power mesh fabric..im just a little unsire of where to put it on the form in regards to pre-pouring the mask
  • Part 3 of our Silicone Mask Making course covers Power Mesh in chapter 3:

You can basically make it as a full hood, making sure to orient the mesh so the direction that stretches more is horizontal.
