ORIGINAL DESIGN - Tortoise-Inspired Scavenger Creature

This creature exists in a forgotten time and place. Scavenging the wastelands to survive, exiled from the rest of her species, here she now sits–amongst what may appear to be junk to the untrained eye–taking a brief moment of respite between hauls.

--------

This piece started initially just as wanting to sculpt a latex mask. The final piece shown in the photo above is the mask then posed on a PVC mannequin, and dressed in various costume pieces (I cannot sew but I did pick out her wardrobe).

Here she is on her PVC mannequin that was made for this project! I’ve learned a lot about that process but that’s a whole ‘nother post entirely...

There are two different paint jobs I did, which was a fun exercise to explore the other aquatic influences she had. The one with the green paint job includes resin eyes I made using clear and white resin, and the irises were designed in Photoshop. The one on the left the eyes are just painted on the latex. That exploration was more into the crabby realm.

The mold making process was the biggest speed bump of the project. Though it wasn't the first time attempting a two part mold, there was some complications with the Ultra-Cal setting, and the mold warping. So any problematic gaps were filled with Chavant clay for the latex pours. That did mean that the patching / seaming was a little more work to try to bridge the area where the mold didn’t meet.

I'll also include some progress pictures of the sculpture. The original concept was just a reptilian type creature, pictured below is the sketch I did. As the sculpture progressed, I thought it would be fun to bring in other aquatic elements like that of cephalopods. My hope was that no matter what this sculpture would be a monster that I could practice various textures on, so I wanted it to have a variety of the hard elements vs. the softer elements.

I guess that about wraps it up. I'll end it with a couple of the finished sculpt.

Thank you for your time, and it's been great to see so many creatures in one spot!
