Re: Sculpting Head Core in Silicon Mask Making Part 2: Finishing the Epoxy & Fiberglass Mold
Hi Brian,
Cores for silicone masks are normally purpose-built by the artist and not an off-the-shelf product. Just as you design your mold based on your sculpture, the sculpture and the mold are both designed based on your core.
In the first image you have a red circle on, the flange is the flat lip that goes around the base of the core. That sockets into your outer mold, centering and holding the core in place. The Ed Head has no flange, so you would have to add one. The flange needs to be very solid so it can support the weight of the core and keep everything perfectly aligned.
The core is very specifically designed so the outer mold, once it's created, will lock into it and support it. It is also designed so the masks created on it will fit snugly and blend into the eyes/mouth properly.
A big challenge here is that normally a very specific set of steps (as outlined in the video) is taken to create a silicone mask, and once you fully understand that process you are freed up to make changes or do things differently. If you are first starting out and making big changes to the process, like not making a standard core, the chances of having successful results start to drop quickly.
I created the image below to help illustrate how a generic silicone mask mold could be designed. You can see how the core sockets into the outer mold, keeping it perfectly centered to allow even space between the core and the outer mold, which is where the silicone will be added. And everything is bolted together to hold things securely in place.

Hope that helps!

Dragon Skin Help
Hello, I’m trying to make a tongue and nose to put on a prop I’m building. I was directed to Dragon Skin silicone (which seems awesome) Anyway which of the dragon skin products would you recommend? There are a few different varieties.
Thank you in advance. Keep making cool stuff!
Re: CRAYOLA CREEP entry 1
This is an amazing concept. I was literally awestruck. There's so much detail and character to soak in. Beautiful work.
Re: CRAYOLA CREEP entry 1
Now that is scary imagination! Childhood is not safe...
Hello! Here’s some masks we’ve made!
Hello! Figured this is a good category to share what I and my boyfriend do for a living, make beast masks!!! Here is our website https://crystumes.weebly.com/
I sculpt the faces, and jaw sets, cast in silicone and plaster gauze mother mold and cast and hinge so the mouths move! We use specialty resin polyurethane resins, smooth on and caulking silicone silicone for molds and tongues, we use two part air drying apoxie sculpt to sculpt lips and eyelids and other form details after the fact. And acrylic half round domes from delves plastics with digitally designed, printed and glued eye designs! We use lots of faux furs from different sources but one of my favorite items to work with is NFT fiber! Ordered from the amazing hairymannscloset . Below are just some of the ones we have finished. Hope you enjoy! I really want to get into more latex work in the future!

PS a lot of our videos from YouTube were nabbed by some foreign scam companies to sell their faux rip off masks so you may have seen this werewolf online already! Haha… ha…
