Why are most of the Demons dead?

As far as I'm aware, there are 6 Demons in DS3, and the game heavily implies, to me anyway, that they are a dying, nearly extinct race. But why are they dying out? Why are there mounds of Demon corpses in the Old Demon King fight, and bodies littered in the catacombs near the ODKs boss room? Sort of makes me feel bad for the aberrations.
