  • Great questions Peter. 1-A LITTLE less gel is OK. But not too little. If its cool where you are running and applying your foam, then I'd go with regular gel. A little warmer, a LITTLE less gel. 2_ I would say no to the syringe. It's an extra step that is completely unnecessary. You want to get the foam spread on to your…
  • James I love the finger nail. Perfect use of, "what can I use that's just lying around".
  • Peter, foam latex or any chemical can go bad within months. If it's not used, agitated, mixed and just stored improperly (which isn't hard to do) it will go bad. I had a 5 gal kit of rigid polyfoam go bad within 6 months and that's pretty hardy material. Having it sit in any fluctuating heat and create moisture will mess…
  • Peter, the paint Mchael is talking about, rubber cement paint, works for both foam latex or rugular slip latex. Foam latex that has gone bad will not set up correctly. Unfortunately, scrap it.
  • PETER... Nooooooooo!!!!!!! Not oil paint. How old is that book? You could paint/color with... RMG (rubber mask grease paint) this is an older technique but it works. You do this using An RMG palette or "Schmink palette". Can also be done with make-up colors like Ben Nye make -up. I'll bring these on Saturday. Pax paint,…
  • What kind of glue are you ussing? Almost any spray glues will delaminate with heat. 74, 77, 90 or any foam spray glues. Just make sure that you are doing 2 layers of glue and letting the first layer dry before applying the second. And glue down the second when it is still tacky but not wet. I hope this helps Justin.
  • When you attach the legs to the body you will want to do it with elastic. You want it to stretch. Webbing would just tighten things up.
  • Reticulated foam. Or L-200. But of course L-200 is very buoyant, you would maybe actually have to weigh it down. The reticulated foam will let the water flow through it and not rot or absorb water like upholstery foam. While the reticulated, or Scott foam, will not absorb water, it will catch it in its cell structure. It…
  • I like it a lot Tom. But it seems that maybe you could get a bit more neck movement. If you're covering the neck with spandex you could cut away any of the foam behind the head and on the body that is crashing and keeping the neck from moving more free. You could also stretch the neck by maybe just a couple inches.
  • Tom, realy fantastic work. I love puppets and puppet building.
  • No Troy, not at this stage. It's just something to keep in mind for the future. The head looks fantastic either way. Maybe just a little bulking up on the body would balance things out. But I wouldn't loose sleep over it. You can also compensate by maybe making the legs just a bit bigger/thicker than you would have. Just a…
  • I wouldn't wet foam over a burned surface. It would defeat the burned texture... completely cover it that is. You can wet foam over the expossed foam or over spandex. But don't spray glue if you intend to wet foam.
  • James, yes you can glue the spandex. But I always prefer a machanical bond, like sewing, exspecialy if I'm ging to wet foam. I would hate to have the spandex come loose. But as I said, if it's being covered by clothing and not getting textured, glueing would do fine.
  • Justin!!! absolutely FANTASTIC!!! But you're going to burn texture and not wet foam?
  • Ciara, I love your cat sculpt. Fantastic anatomy!
  • James, Your texturing is coming along very nicely. And I love the eyes as well. Ciara! 12 HOURS?! ;) Tom, I'm enjoying the muscle structure you're adding. I can't remember if you are adding clothing or not. I would suggest that when you add the spandex that you maybe sew in between each muscle group. I KNOW... it sounds…
  • You got it Ciara! I was confused when I saw my work at first :) But yes, that's very close to how I would build yours.
  • Troy and James. I love the pics that you've posted. Both projects are coming along beautifully. And Tom, love the video. This is directed at Troy's last comment. Don't try and rush to finish... and that goes for all of you. I want to see your progress and you must finish, but not at the expense of quality. Keep your…
  • Sure, spray glue or a barge like glue would work fine adhering the spandex. The removable under shirt is a great idea. It doesn't have to be spandex. Maybe just a very large but altered under shirt.
  • Yes, if the whole upper body is a suit of armor, then use L200. I thought that there were armor pieces over wardrobe.
  • Yes, the body in upholstery foam. But then your character, if I remember, has a costume and your armor pieces will go over that... Yes? And I would make the armor pieces out of L200. If you don't have L200, you can do them with upholstery foam.
  • Hello all. COVERING IN SPANDEX. If your character has clothing... cover those areas with spandex that will be covered with clothes. If your character is made of L-200... Cover with spandex. But only if you intend to do wet foam. Or if you're going to use an other textured fabric as you final skin. If you are going to…
  • James, You can use anything you want as long as you feel it has the stretch you need. I just happen to always use spandex. It's also at times called milskin. We by it in such bulk, 50 to 100 yrds at a time, in the shop and it's relitivly inexpensive at about $13. per yard.
  • Tom, the zip ties will be fine on the top L200 portion. But the upholstery foam isn't strong enough for that. You'll have to reinforce with muslin or canvas.
  • Justin, it looks like you're coming along nicely. Good grasp on the pattern making. The chest and abs do seem a bit rough. I think you could have, and still could, flip those shapes. Meaning when you bevel cut the foam and apply it to the body, you do it bevel cut down. Not up. That way you are left with a smooth shape. It…
  • Troy, you've taken on an incredibly ambitious project and I think you're doing an incredible job. The video test is quite impressive. I think that when you sculpt your legs, they should be done slightly more extended than they would when just relaxed. That way the foam acts as the return devise.
  • All I can say is WOW! Everyone seems to be grasping foam fab fantastically. Keep up the good work. I'm looking forward to talking to you all tomorrow.
  • Michael, great use of that technique. Just a little texture will make all of those forms pop. Good job.
  • Ciara, great job with the mannequin. Some times you need to stop your work in order to do something to make the work better and easier. In your case, I'm sure the mannequin is worth it. Keep forging ahead.
  • It looks like you're working in a small space... I hope it's well vented :)
