I’m Alex, a Queensland prop maker and cosplayer with a love of making “different” and weird nerdy things.
I’ve been creating cosplays since 2015 and have since shifted my focus to props, creatures and puppetry. I’ve finished studying a Bachelor of Design to further improve my 3D art skills and creative talent. I also enjoy digitally sculpting, hard surface modelling and creating virtual environments.

What I've been doing on my resumes is under the Education section, adding "Currently an active student of the Stan Winston School of Character Arts". Of course, like Matt said, the portfolio is what really shows that you've been learning!

That's a shame to hear. Hopefully they'll keep making videos, as even though I haven't watched them for a while, they were really helpful in getting started with mold making and casting!

If you are just spinning it on one axis, would it be possible to set it up on something like a spit rotisserie? One that you can adjust the speed of to get it right for your needs.

For a first timer this is spectacular! I especially love the painted woodwork texture. Working with video game physics is always a jolly fun happy time. I'm quite involved with people who make Spartans from Halo, so I know how annoying clipping is in video games with armour. My main feedback would be for the metallic parts…

Looks great! I reckon you could do this with EVA foam. You may have to make some base patterns, and then glue layers of foam sheets and carve/sand them to shave, but you can also use foam clay for a medium that is closer to actual clay, sculpting wise. It's a lightweight and relatively durable material that is often used…

Chris basically beat me to it, but having a team of passionate, hard working people always looking to improve their craft would be worth more to me than any fancy smancy tool. But they have to like my music. I control the mixtape.

I may be too late now to offer some helpful advice for your project, but I recently did something similar to Adam's eyelids. I needed twelve total eyelids to close at once. Using a trigger, a nylon cable was pulled, which pulled up the top eylid on the reverse side of the pivot point which forced the eyelid closed, and…

Looks great! I've also been printing mechanical parts, what material do you print from? As for the fabric, I think I get what you're saying the trouble is, but if you have a video that might further help shine a light on the issue. I'm only new to animatronics but maybe with some visuals I or others may be able to identify…
-
Awesome! Is there video of it in action, or are the mechanics yet to be finalised?

Last year I took "The Business of Making Monsters" courses by Shannon Shea and they were extremely helpful. I feel like I'm in a similar situation - it's hard, even in Australia, to find work in the creative industry I'd like to get into. I wouldn't say you need to have a college degree in the arts to get a job - though,…

Love anything Little Shop! The sympathetic movement on those leaves add a whole lot too

Thanks a heap Chris! I knew rubber cement was used in the latex painting process, didn't know it could be used by itself. Alas it seems that to get enough volume of rubber cement would be quite costly. I'll have to see how I go time wise for this project - it'd be my first time using latex and I don't want to feel too time…

Looks sweet so far, especially those textures! My feedback would be to add in a bit of variety of larger forms - things like folds, wrinkles, or the appearance of bones or tendons pushing against the skin. Some reference I'd look at would be the Flood creatures from Halo.
-
They're some really great, unique takes on sirens!

I can't offer much help myself, as I haven't done it yet, but this course by BJ Guyer should make a great starting place! https://www.stanwinstonschool.com/tutorials/puppet-mechanism-basics-eyes-brows-ears-part-2

Cheers Chris!

I'm currently working on my resume, cover letter and portfolio based on what I've learnt from this lesson. I was hoping I may be able to get some advice from the community, if this is the right place for it. Originally, I had my portfolio as one page at the end of my resume. Should the portfolio then be a separate piece,…

Cheers Chris!

Nice stuff! I've got a tub of Monster Clay I've hardly used because I mostly do digital sculpting. I think you've given me the push to refine my hand sculpting skills over the holidays.

Wow, thanks for bumping up this post Etienne... I had no idea this course existed, and even in the first half hour I have learnt so much! Wish I had watched it at the start of the year.
-
Textures look great so far! You say you're looking for something more - is there a character or creature that you're aiming to mimic, or taking inspiration from?
-
What do I think? I think it was a bad idea to jump on this thread before going to bed. Jokes aside - what materials did you use to make the mask?
-
Looks great, and those legs work well! I think I need to try using constraints in 3D modelling to test mechanisms, like you did with that animation. Sorry if I missed it as I only had time to jump around the video, but do you also plan to do additional painting/decor to your bird?
