Hi Community! I am building a puppet snake and would appreciate a little input on the body construction since I'm very new to this process.

I've been trying to go extremely carefully, watching and rewatching BJ's courses, then careful designing my pattern as I go. The courses are great, but the issue I've run into here doesn't seem to be addressed.

Basically, I need to make a body that's more flexible than a classic puppet chest body, but still holds some basic shape.

I drew a diagram explaining the issue I'm running into, and then will give more context below.

This morning I created a chest body out of 1/2 inch reticulated foam. The shape looked nice, but my fist couldn't fit through the neck opening. I could alter my pattern and expand the whole chest so my fist slides through, but I don't think that would look as good.

What I think I need is a chest structure that can stretch a little for my fist to slide through, but hold some decent structure around my wrist and forearm. I also want the tail of the snake after the hand opening to be pose-able.

Therefore, I'm trying to think how I could create a flexible structure for the snake body that still holds shape without the fabric sagging.

A few options I am considering: (feel free to skip if you already know what I should do:)

Poly fil -- Cut and stitch the fleece body, then simply stuff it with poly fil. I'm inexperienced at this and am concerned I won't get quite enough support for the shape of the body and the puppet's skin will fold or sag inward.

Boning? Could I create an under structure of boning rings to supplement the poly fil? Main concern there is the fabric sagging between boning rings.

Other option I can think of is a different foam. I saw Swizzle Productions use a flexible, open cell soft foam for hands on a video.

My preference is whatever option is simplest and cheapest, and would love the community's input here! Thank you!

I have a few other questions if any of the veterans on the forums would be able to chime in, but one thing at a time!

In the photo above, it is resting on a black wooden stand. When used, the puppeteers enter from below and strap into hiker backpack frames that are attached to the overall horse frame. These are adjustable within 4-5 inches to allow for varying heights of puppeteers.

I’m not a welder, so we used a wood frame with PVC
electrical conduit for the exterior. (I’m betting if an
aluminum frame was used, it would save some weight.) I used a large torch (typically used for weed
removal or tar repair) to soften the conduit. This allowed the tubes to be shaped as needed.
The ears and tail move using levers the rider pulls (bicycle break
levers).

The legs articulate similar to

The puppet is right around 100 pounds itself. We had a rider on top, so this was very heavy
for the puppeters. (They did an
excellent job.) I would estimate this took about 150 hours of work.

I don’t have a picture of the performance, but we heavily
low fogged the stage during this scene and had the horse emerge from the back
stage right.

This was my first time doing something like this and Kraig’s pictures were incredibly helpful. (Kraig's is better!) Thank you Kraig.

Our final performance was last night… now what do we do with
this thing!

Open and close hand means opening and closing the mouth..(if you remember the Dinosaur hand puppet toys McDonalds had 20+ years ago, similar to that)
We did a proof of concept/short over a year ago and our first version was very successful. Limited budget, time etc… I had a silicone mold of the creature and roto casted a few layers of platsil gel 10. I added a bit of power mesh here and there to add some strength…like I said low budget, limited time etc…
This honestly worked pretty great and has ultimately got us more funding to do a feature. But I’d like to improve upon this design so puppeteer might be better. (Ps, the reason we went with a silicone skin was because the amount of goo, milk like substance…vomit etc this creature encounters and produces…made clean up better)
I recently watched the “ lab work for animatronic characters with pro FX technician Cory” and it was really great!
Im wondering if making a skin similar to how he made the ET skin would be suitable for a hand puppet? Would deadening the silicone make operation nicer? Maybe too soft for a hand puppet? Would the panty house be suitable to have a hand on top of it operating? Or will it still feel tacky due to the deadener?
There is no added mechanism in the puppet, only my hand opening and closing a mouth.

What would you do? Stick to the same but improve? Or create a skin like Corey did?

thanks!

Cassea

I'm 2 years into puppet building on a large, semi-professional scale. I actually don't know when I make the leap into calling myself a professional... I was hired and paid... I won a national award for puppetry design and construction from the Kennedy Center yet it still feels like I haven't earned that title yet. Eventually.

Anyway- a friend of mine recently asked me to make their dragon for Shrek The Musical and I immediately said no because I was so intimidated by the scale, but after some thought I changed my mind and I'm so glad I did. This project pushed me as an artist and a person, and there were times I thought I would break, but I pushed through and I'm very pleased with the end result.
Shout-out to the How to Fabricate a Monster Suit course, Puppet Mechanism courses, Sculpting Basics and Foam Fabrication for holding my hand through this. 😅

I hope you enjoy her.

Her eyes have LED lights and switch from red to green via a remote off stage. Her wings *were* articulated via a pulley but they snapped during the installation and I didn't have time to repair it. Her eyes also opened and closed but that was other hiccup so I scraped it and they live open now.

Her skull is a PVC base with a standard eye blink mech. I patterned the head myself and used EVA to construct it.
Her body structure is also PVC with extra large hulahoops and plastic corset boning to make out a cage of sorts. The tail was my biggest engineering feat and took over 8 hours to get right. It was extremely important to me that the movement was just right. When she was on stage she was able to dance and fight Donkey and Shrek using her tail as a weapon.
This entire build took about 200 hours to complete.
I'm still learning and had to make a lot of compromises just because of my own limitations, but overall I'm extremely proud of her.

<img src="https://us.v-cdn.net/5020761/uploads/editor/ti/7arvwiygwp3p.jpg" alt="" Is there a lesson or info on how that worked? I have 6 custom puppets to create pretty quickly and am looking for direction on design function and whether to paint or cover with scale like materials on the bodies. ANY links to instruction or advice from puppets masters is appreciated.

Hi,
I’m wanting to build an eel puppet to use underwater that will be filmed both underwater and from the surface. I’m thinking that a rod puppet could work, but it may be difficult to get convincing movement. An animatronic puppet might be doable, but getting it “swimming” right and keeping the whole thing watertight might be even more challenging. Suggestions on approach, materials, mechanisms, in fact anything helpful, would be appreciated.
Cheers,

Howdy,
I am an avid maker and author. I am in the process of trying to make a mechanized puppet out of an ethically sourced taxidermied soft-mount fox. Hmm--taxidermy and mech--I know, it's a bit of a long shot. If all goes to plan, it will be one of the creatures from the book I am writing. More than anything, I'm excited to try something I haven't done before.

The Problem:
I've got a good idea on how to do the neck, tail, and leg mechanisms, and have already started fabrication--but for the head, I am planning on only mechanizing the ears (sadly, the eyelids and lips wouldn't do well being mechanized), but I am stumped. The problem is, I am not sure how to orient/make the mechanism in the ears so that they move naturally. Do they pivot from the central base of the ear--do they pivot from the inside edge? What angle should the pivot be in reference to the skull? I've looked at lot of reference videos of foxes, and cannot seem to get a clear idea on the anatomy of a fox ear--and how to make that mechanism. Are there any of the online courses you would recommend that may cover a similar process or any other resources that would help me understand how I could make this mechanism? I hope I explained the problem well--let me know if pictures or further information is necessary.

Thanks for your help,
Cheers,

DodgerDude

Hello,
I'd like to create puppets with mechanisms to modulate their facial expression. For example, being able to play an interpretation of "The Expression" from Disco Elysium would be fantastic ( https://www.thegamer.com/disco-elysium-the-expression-scathing-portrait-misery/ ). I've found two advanced, realistic examples, one with the lips of a monkey (https://www.lonewolftribe.com/post/another-interesting-blog-post-yet-to-be-written) and the other with all the muscles of the face (see pictures), both using silicone skin, tubes and cables.
I'd like to create a low-fidelity prototype, to get a feel for how it works, and I'd like to know if anyone has already experimented on the subject and could provide some images or even videos of a similar, simpler mechanism. Other than silicone, has anyone suggested anything else?

Thanks a lot!

Jon Harlow mentions that the rat demon (Demon of Grief) was created in ZBrush and then printed. Behind the scenes, it looks like a moveable puppet rather than a static 3D-printed statue. Does anyone know how this creature was printed? Was it printed in resin and then molded? I'm interested in the techniques used to create it.

I'm currently remaking some puppet eye mechanisms, in which the eyelids are closed when a nylon wire is pulled. The old design for the trigger handle (while it did work and wasn't uncomfortable to hold/use) sat quite loosely in my hand, making it just a bit more difficult to keep a grip when squeezing and releasing it.

^Old design

For this new one I might add a "D-guard" to the trigger itself so my fingers are more secured to the piece. I know I can also add grooves for fingers, add a wrist strap or use rubber/silicone to make the handle more non-slip.

What designs for trigger handles do you guys enjoy using/have seen used?

I know these goofballs well and I knew I had to make something unique to share with them - so I made a Halo 3 ODST Engineer puppet! In keeping with the naming conventions of Halo lore, it's name is Smaller Than Average, but it's much more fun to call it Lumpy Space Princess.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iu6j3HOpeVo

Many different processes are used to bring the character to life, and I had to make sure it could all pack up for a trip from Australia to Canada and back. The body is an EVA foam balloon shape with foam clay details, whilst the tentacles, sacs and the head are upholstery foam. Using this material I could cut and sand the parts to shape, colour them, while being soft and flexible, and easy to pack for an overseas trip. The courses by BJ Guyer were invaluable, as it was my first time using upholstery foam in a fashion that was sculpted, or wouldn't be covered. Having insight to his mechanics also helped.

The sacs work via a cable mechanism hooked up to a glove inside the body. With my left fingers, I can flex and relax them to control the inflation and deflation of most of the sacs.

For the eyes, another nylon line mechanism is used to pull the eyelids down, with springs pulling them back open. Gears inside of the eyeball also drive the bottom eyelids open. This is all controlled with a trigger mechanism held by the right hand, which doubles as the rod to control the movement of the head. I'm currently re-working this mechanism to make it more reliable, quieter, and require less tuning/strings.

For some extra motion, the tentacles are weighed with fishing ball bearings to add mass and momentum, allowing them to swing much more. To paint the armour, layers of spray paints (including black, metallics, clear coats then the final coat) were stacked up and then stripped back down using a brick, files and sandpaper for more natural-appearing weathering - as shown below, on a different project:

I like to call it the "Buttercup" method, because you build it up just to let it down.

There's still a lot of detail that I left out because of how many different methodologies went into this, but you can read just about everything here on the 405th Forums.

I look forward to learning more from the Stan Winston school and forums, and continuing to update the puppet!

Hello Stan Winston School! I've recently taken Scott Land's course on Mastering marionettes. I've made a few with counter-weighted mechanisms, but I'd like to learn how to make them spring-loaded, the way Scott Land does his. unfortunately, I can't seem the find a spring that works for me.
Hey there Winston Community,

I am budgeting out a short horror film to be crowd funded and shot in Los Angeles later this year.

the short calls for some simple bloody makeup effects as well as a photorealistic German Shepherd puppet that has been mauled (no movement needed) and the main monster himself, which is the result of a man’s chest ripping open and his ribs extending out like an arachnid (reminiscent of the creatures in The Thing).

My goal is to shoot the monster practically as a puppet and remove the puppeteers/wires in post.

If interested, respond here with examples of your work. If I think you’d be a good fit, I will send you my contact info and we can chat.

Matt

Hello!

I recently completed a Fawkes "rod" puppet that was created in about two months. There's around 2,000 feathers glued on the model. Other materials include fiberglass, latex, epoxy, various fabrics, silicone, and more. It weighs about 10-15 pounds (haven't gotten an exact weight), is 3 feet tall with a wingspan of 6.8 feet. Fawkes is definitely one of my favorite creature characters out there! I am a bit biased though since I'm already a huge bird and dinosaur fan.

His head can be rotated and extended with a pole that's back behind the tail. Mouth opens and closes and wings are able to extend and fold in. The legs move too but they're mainly supposed to be static to hold up the weight.
<img src="https://us.v-cdn.net/5020761/uploads/editor/54/jl9hhv16d2tu.jpg" alt="" title="Image:
I recently did a foam run where I filled three ultracal molds and placed them in my makeshift oven. One mold was small ( a forehead prosthetic). The other two were face molds, about the same size. My oven circulates air. When I demolded the three molds, the smallest mold (forehead) turned out well and was cured. One of the face pieces turned out well, too, but the third felt (soupy) in the middle, as if it hadn't fully cured. Does anyone know why this may have happened ? Because I ran them all at the same time (2 hours and forty minutes). I don't understand why 2 turned out and one didn't. Also, once a prosthetic is demolded and not completely cured, can I cure it after the fact?
