Fur: Best sources?

 Hello everyone !

I am trying to find the best sources for fur and flocking for a project I have coming up. It involves making a dead polar bear. For the most realistic look, where are some places that I should check out for fur?

Thanks for your Time! I've also watched the awesome fur videos on this site. Very useful !

  • The best source that I know of for fur is National Fiber Technology:  https://www.nftech.com/    Their fur can be a bit expensive for the hobbyist, but that cost directly correlates to their unmatched quality.  Pretty much every furry creature you seen on film or tv has NFT products on it.

For flocking, I usually google flocking and browse around the various sites until I find the length and color I want.  Finding longer fibers can be tricky.  You can also make your own flocking by trimming down fibers yourself, but that can be very labor intensive.

  • Hi Clara,

  • Hi Clara,

    Here is Deborah's response:

"When you're doing a fur transfer, it just all depends on what you’re working on, and the type of fur you want to use for that project. I always look online to get fur. Whether it’s synthetic or real pelts, you can always find it online if you search "furs". As for the chicken pelt, I purchased it at a taxidermy place. Bischoff's in Burbank, California: https://bischoffsanimals.com/"

    Hope that helps!

    Thanks,

  • Hey Clara,
National Fiber also has a remnants outlet called Hairymann’s Closet. It’s basically the leftovers from larger custom orders so the pieces are fairly small, mostly sold in square feet, not yards. Still pretty expensive, but worlds better in costume use than most fabric store furs. Here’s a link:

    Happy hairing!

  • Todd,

I had no idea that site existed, thanks so much for sharing that!

    NFT makes amazing stuff.
