Concept Maquettes

I recently read an article about the physical concept maquettes used on the new Star Wars films. I'm a beginner model builder, but this really interests me. It's really cool that they still use models somewhat in today's cgi heavy filmmaking. Where can I learn more/or learn on an entry level job? Can anyone help? I have the basic props fabrication/sculpting experience. Thanks!
